If you have worn large and heavy earrings for most of your life or developed an earlobe split due to an injury, our surgeons can easily and effectively repair split earlobes without a referral from your GP.
What are split earlobes?
Split earlobes most commonly involve a split in the earlobe where an ear piercing would typically be placed. In many cases, the earlobe split is often a small, enlarged hole; in other cases, there is a complete split of the earlobe. In either case, earlobe surgery is the most effective way to correct a split earlobe. Most people develop split earlobes from wearing large or heavy earrings for many years. Over time, the added weight of the earrings, combined with the natural ageing process, may result in an ear piercing giving way and tearing, either fully or partially. Split earlobes may also occur due to earring plugs designed to enlarge an ear piercing. Certain types of inexpensive jewellery often contain nickel, which may be responsible for causing an allergic reaction, potentially leading to a split earlobe. A traumatic injury can also cause a split earlobe.

What does split earlobe surgery involve?
First, we recommend you have an in-person consultation with one of our plastic surgeons to assess the extent of your split earlobe. Your surgeon will take your medical history, including any medicines you may be taking and will examine your split earlobe. If you prefer, you can have the split earlobe procedure on the same day as your consultation, for added convenience.
Split earlobe surgery is a straightforward procedure that takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the extent of surgical correction required. The surgeon will first inject a local anaesthetic to eliminate any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Your surgeon will then repair the split earlobe by surgical removal of the skin around the split earlobe. This helps to create an appropriate surface that should heal and seal the split. The surgeon may close off any earlobe piercing as part of the procedure. It typically takes approximately six weeks for the full healing process to occur after earlobe surgery. If you wish, you may have your ears pierced after this time; however, we recommend avoiding the exact position where a previous piercing occurred.
You can return to your normal daily activities immediately after the procedure, provided there is no impact on your earlobe repair.
